Hypnotherapy for Hair Pulling -- Trichotillomania
Hair pulling -- or trichotillomania (TTM) to give it its medical term -- is a behavioural impulse disorder that causes the individual to pull hair from their head, eyebrows or other parts of the body. It’s a condition that is estimated to affect one or two percent of the population.
In many ways trichotilomania resembles an addiction or habit and there are certainly elements of an obsessive compulsive nature involved with this disorder. In fact, in my clinical practice, I have never come across a single case of TTM that was not accompanied by at least some form of OCD and underlying anxiety.
It is estimated that around ninety percent of those with issues of hair pulling are female, but research on this is inconclusive. Indeed, it may simply be that men are less likely to seek help for this condition and can more easily hide their symptoms. Interestingly, hair pulling in very young children appears to occur in both males and females to an equal extent, although it does seem to be more benign in nature at this young age.
Most people with trichotillomania pull enough hair over a long enough period of time that they have bald spots on their heads (or missing eyelashes, eyebrows, pubic, or underarm hair), which they go to great lengths to cover with hairstyles, hats, clothing, hair pieces and wigs.
The persistence of this compulsion can vary considerably: For some people, at some times, it is mild and can be modified with a little extra awareness and focus. For others, the urge can become so overpowering that it makes thinking of anything else almost impossible.
Advanced Transformational Hypnotherapy, often combined with Ego State Therapy and TFT can really help in treating compulsive hair pulling – trichotillomania. Often it is necessary to also treat for OCD and underlying anxiety. But the good news is that real help is available for those who suffer from compulsive hair pulling – trichotillomania.
