Fear of Needles
Belonephobia is best defined as a fear of needles, pins or any sharp object. A full 10% of the UK population is believed to suffer from this particular phobia. Though it is quite normal to have a certain amount of trepidation regarding being pierced by needles, the needle phobic individual can become intensely anxious and tense in the presence – or even the thought – of any procedure requiring their use. Fear can easily progress to panic and this in turn can lead to the avoidance of needles and, by extension, effective medical and dental treatment.
